Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn't think she's the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "Duffy," she throws her Coke in his face. But things aren't so great at home right now. Desperate for a distraction, Bianca ends up kissing Wesley. And likes it. Eager for escape, she throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley.Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out that Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.(Synopsis from Little Brown)
This book was not what I expected at all. When I first heard and read the synopsis for The DUFF I thought it sounded interesting and it might be fun to read but it was way more than just interesting and fun!
Bianca is a girl that's really negative, does not believe you can fall in love in high school, and has a very low self esteem. She is told by the hot guy from school named Wesley that she is The DUFF (the designated ugly fat friend) which she never heard of before until then. From then on she can't stop thinking about that word and she starts looking at herself and the people around her and ends up considering herself the DUFF. While her low self esteem gets even lower her family starts to fall apart, her mother files for divorce and her dad starts drinking. Bianca starts looking for a way to forget her problems and finds her distraction with Wesley (the jerk that told her she was the DUFF) she ends up making some really terrible choices and mistakes throughout the book but also learns a lot towards the end.
The DUFF was definitely a fun read that I would recommend, it had me laughing and smiling throughout the whole book, I even cried once. I really liked the main character Bianca even with all her flaws and bad choices, the dialogue was hilarious and she seemed very real to me. Her love interest was very swoon worthy after he stops being a terrible jerk and we get to know more about him as the story progressed. It's definitely one of those books that don't sugarcoat the stuff that teenagers go through, there's sex and the f-word is mentioned several times so be warned! This book had me thinking about my high school years and how I, like many other girls in my high school had a very low self esteem and felt like the DUFF in the group. I think this happens to a lot of people and you can definitely relate to the main character and understand the message the book is trying to get across.

ReplyDeleteAw, I wanna give Bianca a hug. I wasn't sure about this book, but it does sound like something I might enjoy. I'll have to pick it up when it comes out.
ReplyDeleteI remember in high school too what it was like and what it was like for the girls around me. I'm sure this book will have a lot to offer for girls who are going through that now.
